Types of Contraception and How to Know Which Is Best for You

Types of Contraception and How to Know Which Is Best for You
October 16, 2018NancyUncategorized

Sexual intercourse is a biological function we are made to perform at some point in our lives, especially when we are trying to create a family. More often than not, though, we would like to engage in sexual activity without having to conceive. Although conception is also about timing, since it can usually only happen during a woman’s fertile period, we still want to be on the safe side. That is why various contraceptive methods were created to prevent unplanned pregnancies. Here are some contraceptive methods for both males and females:

  • Hormonal Contraception
This is a method which uses hormones to prevent pregnancy and may come in two forms:

    • Contraceptive Pills – when taken properly (once a day), it is 99% effective.
    • Depo Provera Injection – when taken properly (one shot every three months), it is 99% effective.
  • Barrier Methods
This is a simple contraceptive method that involves preventing sperm from entering the vagina:

    • External Condoms – a latex or rubber sheath used to cover the penis.
    • Internal Condoms – condoms used on the inside of the vagina to prevent sperm from entering.
  • Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
This type of contraception is sometimes labeled as “fit and forget” contraception because you do not have to remember to take it every day or every other month, as it lasts for a long time, but can be, however, reversed if you would decide to conceive.

    • Intra-Uterine Device (IUD) – an LARC that is placed in a woman’s uterus, and can last up to five to ten years.
    • The Implant – or “rods” which can last up to 5 years.
  • Permanent Contraception
Sometimes called “sterilization”, this method of contraception is for those who do not intend to conceive at all, or any more, as the effects are permanent, and are very difficult—or impossible—to reverse.

    • Vasectomy – permanent contraception for males, where a part of each vas deferens, or sperm duct, is being cut and removed for sterilization.
    • Tubal Ligation – permanent contraception for females that involves severing and tying the fallopian tubes.
  • Emergency Contraception
This is a method of contraception done after unprotected sexual intercourse.

    • Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) – can be taken up to three days after unprotected sex. It is 98% effective if taken properly.
    • Copper IUD – a long-acting reversible contraception that can be implanted after unprotected sex and will prevent pregnancy.

We all know the importance of being aware and properly informed on the various things we can do when it comes to our sexual health. Of course, it is best to be prepared and to seek professional, medical help as your preparations are vital for your safety and health. Take care of yourself, and seek an obstetrician-gynecologist who you can trust will be able to help you decide on the right method for your body. Trust Alliance ObGyn & Consultants, LLC to help and assist you in your sexual and reproductive health as we offer our services with genuine and professional care.
