Prenatal Care Q & A
What happens during my first prenatal visit?
During your first visit to Alliance OB/GYN as a pregnant woman, the team will gather a lot of information on you and run a number of tests. It may seem like a lot, but it’s all for the good of you and your baby. Some of the information they gather:
- Your height and weight
- Your routine vitals
- Your blood type
- Your family history
- Your health history
- Any concerns or anxieties you have
Some of the tests and screenings they run include:
- HIV screening
- Rh factor blood test
- Rubella screening
- Syphilis screening
- Cystic fibrosis carrier screening
- Hepatitis screening
During your first prenatal visit, you can also learn your due date, and you may or may not be able to see an image of your baby on an ultrasound. At the end of the visit, your Alliance OB/GYN doctor will go over with you the best prenatal routine for you (diet, supplements, activity level, etc.).
What is a high-risk pregnancy?
One of the many insights your doctor will gain during your first prenatal visit is whether or not your pregnancy is high risk. High-risk pregnancies are any pregnancy that requires specialized care because they threaten the health or life of the mother or child.
Common factors related to high-risk pregnancies include:
- Age
- Existing health problems
- Obesity
- Multiple births
Fortunately, the team at Alliance OB/GYN specializes in high-risk pregnancies. If your pregnancy is high-risk, your Alliance OB/GYN team members devise a plan to keep you and baby healthy throughout your pregnancy and during delivery.
What is a cesarean section?
A cesarean section, or C-section, is a surgical procedure during which you deliver your baby via an incision in your abdomen and uterus. Two of the doctors at Alliance OB/GYN perform C-sections, and if you have a C-section, one of them takes care of you and baby through your whole delivery.
Your Alliance OB/GYN team only considers a C-section if and when:
- Your baby is in distress
- Your baby is in an abnormal position
- You’re carrying three or more babies
- You have something blocking the birth canal, like a large fibroid
- Your umbilical cord is prolapsed
- Your placenta covers the opening of your cervix
- You suffer from a heart condition or a brain condition
- You have an active infection, like a genital herpes outbreak
- You’ve had previous C-sections
If you’re expecting, connect with the team at Alliance OB/GYN for high-quality care. Book your first prenatal visit with them today over the phone or via the online booking tool.
